GAME SUMMARIES

TUESDAY 4.26.11

Regular season play began on Tuesday April 26th with two games at Jefferson.

Bright 14 - Girard 4

Game 1 at 6 PM saw Bright score early and often in a convincing win against the Vikings from Girard 14-4.

The Falcons scored in every inning but the 4th and gradually pulled away. Seven Bright hitters delivered base hits in the game, spreading the offensive attack throughout the lineup. Peter Arbo, Trey Cassara, Kevin Bird, Jordan Spann,Kyle Westholtz, Peyton Aucoin  and Trevor Quatroy did the damage with their bats. Trey Casara started on the mound for Bright and pitched 4 innings, giving up a lone run in the 3rd.

The Vikings did bang out 8 base hits with Tristen Hose getting 2 of those.  Jesse Acosta had  a double.

Girard was plagued by infield errors which just gave the opponents too many base runners, making it very difficult to hold down the score.

Little Farms 13 - Lakeshore 3

Lakeshore started with an early score in the top of the first, but then promptly allowed 10 runs in the bottom of the stanza. This made the remainder of the game a difficult climb and the Indians never regained their go-ahead position.

DP Collette was the Pirates' starting pitcher and he threw well and kept the Lakeshore contingent off-balance, allowing only three well-spaced runs.

Four Indians came up with offensive help - Nickie Toups, with a game-opening triple, Kevin Plunkett, Scott Lauland and Chad Aucoin.

The loud bat for the Pirates was swung by Harry Philippi, who went 3 for 3 on the night, with a double, a single and a triple. Jake Charpentier had a double.

Miley was off, enjoying a first night bye.

League play continues Saturday and Sunday at Jefferson with double-headers on each of thiose days.

SATURDAY, APRIL 30th

LF 18 - GIRARD 12

Girard led through 3 innings by a score of 10-3. Then the bottom fell out. The LF 4th inning was a complete disaster for the Vikings. They allowed a total of 15 runs and it looked like the inning would never end.

Twenty-one (21) batters came to the plate in the Pirate 4th, with one LF hitter getting 3 trips to the dish in that one period.

There were 6 LF base hits in that 4th stanza, along with 7 BBs and 4 hit batters. There were no Girard errors at all, just a combination of free passes followed by base hits with multiple base-runners.

The Vikings were led by Grant Planchett and Stephen Enright, each of whom collected 2 base hits.

In the early going LF struggled with routine ground balls, kicking it around and making it easy for the Vikings. Then, the ugly 4th inning turned everything around. The Vikings got 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th, but that was all they could muster.

The Pirates banged out a total of 10 its with Kerby Steiffel, Christian Smith and Cory Ronan each delivering 2 hits on the game.

MILEY 6 - BRIGHT 3

Miley started the scoring in thew 2nd inning with a lone run. Then they scored a single run in their 3rd when Nemo Bradley delivered a single with 2 outs, scoring Josh Lopez. Lopez began the inning with a single.

Bright bounced in the bottom of the 3rd with 3 scores to jump ahead 3-2. After 2 Miley errors and a ground-out, Trey Cassara single din 2 runs. A bit later Jordan Spann singled home Cassara.

The 4th inning told the tale as the Cardinals were able to get 4 runs and pull away sufficiently.

Kyle Schnieder reached on an infield error with one out. A fly ball to right  moved the Falcons closer to ending the inning. However a walk to Lopez, a single by Trent Tully and a later double by Dominick Giovingo did the damage.

Bright was held to just 3 hits by Giovingo, who pitched the complete game win, striking out 5, but walking none.

Bright's base hits came from Cassara, Kevin Bird and Jordan Spann.

On the bright side for the Falcons, the pitching combination of Kevin Bird and Trey Cassara allowed only 4 Cardinal base hits and struck out a total of 10 Miley hitters.

BRIGHT 11LAKESHORE 4

It was a real tight baseball game through three innings with the Falcons ahead by a score of 3-2. Bright had scored a run in the first when Trey Cassara drove in Chase Fourcade, who had earlier walked and moved to third on an error. The Indians tied it in the 2nd with three successive singles. With two Indians on base, Kirk Moyer singled in the tying run.

Then in the third stanza, Zach Gorrondona singled in 2 more scores with two outs , to take back the lead.

However, the 4th inning brought a rash of runs resulting from three errors, a base-on-balls, followed by a Kevin Bird triple. When the dust settled, the Falcons had tallied 5 runs, pulling away to a 8-2 score. However, Lakeshore got 2 back with singles by Cole Retif, Nickie Toups, and Andrew McGuire.

The Bright crew sealed the deal in the 5th with 3 more scores.  The 3 runs were produced with only one base hit, a single by Kyle Westholtz, to open the inning. Two walks, a hit batter, a balk and an outfield error allowed all the scoring.

While Lakeshore out-hit Bright 10 hits to 4, the  7 BBs, 7 Es and one hit batter, produced a total of 19 Falcon base-runners.  It was just too much to over come.

The bright spots in the Lakeshore line-up came from Nickie Toups who was 2 for 3 for the day, and Andrew McGuire who was a perfect 3 for 3.

GIRARD 9MLEY 9

Girard has experienced giving up big innings and losing leads. It happened again on Sunday against the Cardinals. Girard had built what appeared to be a comfortable 8-4 lead after three full innings.  But that’s when it started to get interesting as Miley came back, getting 3 runs in the 4th and another 2 in the 5th.

The game ended with the Cardinals batting in the bottom of the 5th with runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs. The Vikings were able to get a ground out to close out the contest.

After all was done, it was a 9 all tie.

Girard had 9 hits and Miley had 10.  Jesse Acosta was 2 for 2 for the Vikes, while Tucker Boesch and Craig Hefler each had 2 hits for the Cardinals.

TUESDAY, MAY 3, 2011

Lakeshore 9 - Girard 3

This was a curious game on Tuesday night with the Vikings losing by 6 runs, but only allowing 2 base hits by the Indians. Lakeshore's 9 scores were scored with 8 coming in the long third inning and the 9th happened in the 4th as the game played itself out.

The green and white were greatly aided by the 9 BBs and 3 Es Girard provided them. The Lakeshore hits came in the second stanza with Scott Lauland delivering a triple  with 2 on. Later, David Discon singled in Lauland and Kevin Plunkett. Later a Sac fly by Glen Lorio plated another run.

The Vikes got 2 early runs in the 1st, cam e up dry in the 2nd and 4th and scored once in their 3rd time at bat. Six different Vikings had base hits, with Glen Gebo, Steven Enright, Tyler Troncoso, Nicholas Nunez and Tristen Hose collecting singles. Jack Heidingsfelder had a double.

Miley 6 - Little Farms 5

The Cardinals continued to win, defeating the Pirates from River Ridge by a lone run. Dominick Giovingo got his 2nd win on the  mound and pitched a complete game. He allowed 5 runs on 7 hits and struck out 7 Pirates. Dominick only walked one batter, but he struck three others.

Harry Phillipi swung the big bat for LF, getting 2 singles in three trips to the plate. Likewise, Christian Smith went 2 for 3.

For MIley, Nemo Bradley had 2 hits in his two chances.

SATURDAY, MAY 7, 2011

LF 11 - Bright 9

The early game on Saturday had LF dueling Bright for a chance to keep close to Miley, the early league leader.

LF jumped out with three runs in the top of the 1st. The Falcons answered with 3 three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Pirates kept the pressure on with four more scores in their next at bat. Bright went up and down in order in the bottom of the 2nd. LF added one in their 3rd, making it 8-3. The Falcons answered with 2 runs in their 3rd, cutting the lead to 8-5. But LF pushed back, driving two more runs across the plate in their 4th stanza, raising the score to 10-5. The Falcons scored twice in the bottom of the 4th, again cutting the\ lead to 10-7. The 5th saw LF continue with their offensive barrage, scoring a lone run to crank the score to 11-7. Bright had one more chance and did get two runs, but that was all. The final was 11-9.

The Pirates banged out a total of 14 nits off Bright pitching. The LF leaders were DP Collet with a perfect 3 for 3 day, including a triple and 2 doubles. Colby Mitchell had 3 hits in his 4 trips to the batting box, including 2 doubles. Bryan Whittle was 2 for 3 with a double.

Bright's leaders were Kyle Westholtz, who was 2 for 2, and Jordan Spann who went 2 for 3, with a double.

MIley 8 - Lakeshore 5

Lakeshore led 4-2 after two innings were finished, but Miley got 2 scores in their 3rd and the Indians got only one. So after four at bats each, Lakeshore was ahead 5-4.

The 4th was scoreless. The 5th was where the game was decided. The Cardinals ran across 4 scores and the Indians were held to none. After the dust settled it was Cardinals ahead and winning 8-5.

Miley got their 8 runs on just 6 hits. But an additional 2 BBs and 2 batters hit by pitch added 4 more base runners and put additional pressure on the Indian defense. Four Lakeshore errors either allowed runners to score or added more Cardinals on base. Eventually this cost the Indians more runs.

Six different Cardinals hit safely in the game. They were: Trent Tully, Tucker Boesch, Nemo Bradley, Conner Cosse`, Kyle Schneider and Craig Hefler.

The Indians were held to just three base hits on Saturday. Nickie Toups, Cole Retif and Glen Lorio provided the offense for Lakeshore, with Retif doubling in the 3rd inning.

SUNDAY, May 8, 2011

Bright 7 - Girard 1

The early ball game on Mother's Day Sunday was well played through 4 full innings. Bright led 2-1 at that point. It was Girard's handling of the Bright 5th at bat that allowed the Falcons to pull away to a comfortable lead, and eventually the win.

Girard was scoreless through their first 3 at bats, but managed to get a single run in the top of the 4th to tie the game at one. Three straight singles by Stephen Enright, Jesse Acosta and Cole Greishaber pushed Enright across with the score.

Bright got their first run in the bottom of the 1st after Chase Fourcade singled and Kevin Bird doubled. In between the two hits Fourcade stole second base. The Bird double drove him in.

Then, after Girard tied the game i the 4th, the Falcons answered in the bottom of the inning with a go-ahead run. With two outs, Peyton Aucoin singled  and moved to second on a passed ball. It was George Scifo who then singled him home to regain the lead.

The Vikes went up and down in order in their 5th and it appeared we would actually get in a seven-inning game. However, the bottom of the 5th slowed way down as the Vikings struggled to get outs. After an opening strikeout, an infield error gave Bright a base runner, and a series of walks and base hits allowed Bright to pick up five scores and stretch their lead considerably.

Girard did have a Glen Gebo base hit in the 5th, but it was all they could muster and time expired with the "W" in Bright's hands.

Nine (9) different  Bright hitters banged out base hits in the game, with George Scifo getting two on the day. Overall it was a very efficient and well played game,  but for the bottom of the 5th.

LAKESHORE 12 - LITTLE FARMS 8

The Indians and the Pirates had seven hits apiece, but Lakeshore found a way to collect 12 scores from those hits. LF could only manage 8. A major difference was the 11 base-on-balls the Pirates gifted the Indians. Those extra base runners provided opportunities and the Indians capitalized.

The game went back and forth and was knotted at 6 all as the game went to the bottom of the 4th with Lakeshore coming to bat. In that stanza eleven Indians came to the plate and 6 of them scored, giving Lakleshore the cushion they sought to put the game away.

The offensive leader for the Pirates was Colby Mitchell, who was 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored.

For the green and white, Scott Lauland was 2 for 3 and Chad Aucoin was also 2 for 3. The timely hits in the Indian 4th came from Lauland, David Discon and Aucoin. Those hits were sandwiched between walks and they came with runners in scoring position.

TUESDAY,  May 10, 2011

LITTLE FARMS 9 - GIRARD 0

Christian Smith pitched the Pirates to a strong win over the Vikings on Tuesday night. He went the full five innings of the game and allowed but a single base hit, while striking out two  Girard hitters and walked none. Smith also did this and only threw 45 pitches.

The offensive highlight for the Vikings was provided by Tristen Hose, who delivered the only Girard base hit on the evening.

Girard played generally an improved defense, but the timely hitting of the Pirates made the best of the opportunities presented them.

The Pirates delivered 8 base hits with Chris Bologna and Harry Phillippe providing two apiece.  They each had a double.

BRIGHT 8 - MILEY 4

The Falcons jumped on Miley pitching ear;y and often in the first two innings of the late game on Tuesday at Jefferson. Five base hits and four BBs combined to produce 7 runs before the Cardinals could score even one.

Bright scored another run in the top of the 4th making it 8-0, before Miley broke the ice with two scores in the bottom of that inning.

Base hits by Kyle Hueget, Trent Tully and Tucker Boesch were instrumental in picking up another two runs in the Miley 5th inning. The Cardinals made a late run and plated 4 runs in the two-inning rally. But the Cardinal 6th gave them one more chance and Connor Cosse` started it with a single, but the red and white could not managed anything further.

The big guns for the Falcons were Trey Cassara ad Chase Fourcade. Cassara went 2 for 3 as did Fourcade. Chase had a double and a triple in his 2 base hits.

The Bright pitching staff of Kevin Bird, Taylor Hastings, Chase Fourcade and Trey Cassara combined to produce 10 Ks at the expense of the Miley hitters. Kevin Bird recorded 9 of those strike-outs in the four innings he worked on the hill.

SATURDAY MAY 14, 2011

Lakeshore 6 - Bright 3

The Indians collected their 3rd win of the young season with a very nice combination of pitching and defense. The defense played error-free baseball for 6 innings and Kevin Plunkett scattered 6 hits and pitched a ver7 efficient ball game. Plunkett got through the first 5 innings on a total of 55 pitches. The average of 11 pitches per stanza is good and indicates the control he was having, throwing strikes and allowing his defense to make plays and record put-outs.

The Falcons climbed back into the game in the 6th as Plunkett tired a bit, but, after 2 runs scored, Kevin sat down the next three Bright hitters to close out the game. He walked none for the game.

Chase Fourcade had 2 hits in his 3 trips to the plate, with one being a long triple. Kyle Westholtz,Trey Cassara, George Scifo and Trevor Quatroy also had base hits.

The Indians plated their 6 scores on just 4 hits but were assisted by 7 BBs and a couple of mis-played balls.

Miley 8 - Girard 5

Girard has battled hard in the last few outings and have had chances to win, but opponents have found ways to score in the later innings, pulling out victories at the end.

Today was no exception as the game was tied at 5 runs apiece after three full innings. Then Miley was able to pick up three scores in the top of the 4th to pull away. Girard has 2more chances to hit and score, but the seven batters who faced Miley pitching were retired, except for Jesse Acosta who singled with one out.

Girad actually out-hit Miley 8-4, but came up short on the final score.

Acosta was 2 for 3; and Brett Eschete (double), Stephen Enright, Cole Greishaber, Colby Brunet, Nicholas Nunez and Tristen Hose all had hits for the Vikings.

The big bat for Miley was Craig Hefler who went 2 for 2, with a SAC fly scoring a run.

Dominic Giovingo had a good day on the mound and went almost the entire way before he reached his maximum pitch count and had to be removed. He recorded 7 strike-outs and allowed 2 BBs.

SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2011

Girard 5 - Lakeshore 1

The Vikings broke into the win column today with a well-needed victory over the Indians from east Metairie. Girard has been playing well lately, but not for the full game. Today they put a whole game together and shutout the Lakeshore contingent in all but the 2nd inning.

The Viking pitching of Glen Gebo, Colby Brunet and Tyler Braud held the Indians to 3 hits and a lone run.

Girard was not perfect on defense and had its share of misplays, but stiffened when it became necessary to shut down Lakeshore threats.

The Indian offense came from Nickie Toups, Andrew McGuire and Cole Retif, who collected a hit apiece for the Lakeshore effort.

The Vikings scored their 5 runs on only 4 hits, relying on some free passes and delivering hits with men on to run across their scores.

Nicholas Nunez, Tristen Hose, Stephen Enright and Tyler Braud were the Vikings who produced hits to aid the Girard cause.  Braud had a big hit in the 3rd inning with the bases full of Vikings to push across 2 of the day's runs.

LITTLE FARMS 17 - MILEY 10

Sometimes it was mighty difficult to determine which team was doing what in the sea of red uniforms that covered the field in Sunday's later game. With each of the teams wearing red that was easy to understand.

Then we were presented with what was a tale of two contests, as Miley jumped out to a 10-0 lead through its first two at bats.  Everything was going right for the Cardinals as they banged out 9 base hits. They scored 3 times in the first inning and another 7 runs were produced in the second at bat.

Then things went quiet for Miley and LF had its turn to show offense. The Pirates came storming back in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring 9 runs of their own on 5 base hits. They were gifted with 4 BBS and a hit-batter.

LF then turned away the Cardinals in the top of third and sat them down in order. In the bottom half of the inning, the Pirates scored 8 more runs, to push their total to 17. The damage was done by 4 base hits, along with 4 Es and a hit batter.

Things settled down for a while until the the top of the 5th when Miley had their last at bat and scored 3 more times.

The Cardinals had two men on base when Kyle Schneider delivered a double in the gap to score two of the runs in the 5th. Schneider later scored on a mis-palyed ball. Schneider had 2 hits in the game.

Trent Tully and Connor Cosse also had 2 hits each for Miley. Cosse had a double in his 2 hits.

For the Pirates, their offense was led by Harry Phillipe, who had 3 singles in his 3 trips to the dish. Bryan Whittle and Kyle Burns each delivered 2 base hits; Whittle had 2 singles and Burns a single and a double.

We are nearly half-way through the regular schedule and it is interesting to see how our league teams have taken on different personalities and how this will play out as the season winds its way toward the playoff bracket.

TUESDAY, MAY 17, 2011

LITTLE FARMS 10 - Bright 0

The Pirates were impressive on several fronts on Tuesday and they blanked the Falcons from Cleary Avenue 10-0.

Their defense was solid as they played error-free baseball and allowed no freebies to the Bright crew.

The Pirate offense banged out eight hits in scoring their 10 runs wit 8 different LF hitters delivering hits.

The LF pitching was top-notch as Christian Smith shut-out the Falcons and no-hit them as well. He did all of this on 55 pitches, facing only 14 batters for the game - 2 more than the minimum. He was 2  base runners shy of a perfect game.

He did allow one walk and he did hit one batter - and these were the two at-bats that produced the only two base-runners for the Falcons.

The game was a lot closer than the score would indicate as it was scoreless through two and a half innings. Both teams were pitching well and playing good defense. Then, in the bottom of the 3rd, LF scored 8 runs - all with 2 outs, banging out 6 hits, and receiving the aid of 2 Falcon BBs and 2 Falcon Es.

Jake Charpentier jumped on as fast ball and drove it to the fence in LF's big inning, driving in 2 runs.

MILEY 3 - Lakeshore 1

Connor Cosse and Dominic Giovingo combined to pitch the Cardinals to a close win Tuesday evening in the late game. They one-hit the Indians but gave out 8 free passes by the way of bases-on-balls. The red and white defense made a single error.

The Lakeshore offense stranded  8 runners on base, finding timely hitting hard to come by. However, Scott Lauland was the Indian with the base hit on Tuesday.

The Cardinals were behind 0-1 through 2 innings, but scored all they needed in the bottom of the 3rd. Those 3 runs were scored without the benefit of a base hit, coming instead on 3 BBs, and several errors, principally throwing problems  which were ill-placed, allowing runners to advance and score.

The Cardinals only had 1 hit themselves as Scott Lauland and then Kevin Plunkett pitched reasonably well and got Cardinals out. Were it not for the errors that came in bunches after base-runners were on via walks, we might still be playing this ballgame.

The lone base hit by the Cardinals came off the bat of Dominic Giovingo.

SATURDAY May 21, 2011

GIRARD 6 - BRIGHT 2

Gelnn Gebo pitched 5 innings and allowed but 3 hits and 2 runs for a complete game win. Bright scored alone run in the top of the first after Chase Fourcade led off with a single, followed by an infield error and he scored on Trey Cassara;'s base hit.

The 2nd and 3rd innings were uneventful for the Falcons as they went up and down in order, except for a walk in the 3rd.

Cassara opened the 4th with a stand-up triple and scored on Jordan Spann's SAC fly to center.

That was it for the Bright crew.

The Vikings went 1-2-3 in their first and second as Trey Cassara held them in check. However, the Girard 3rd inning turned things around as a combination of 3  base hits and 2 Falcon errors resulted in 4 runs and the lead for good.

Ironically, all of the Viking base hits came in that 3rd inning. While they did plate 2 more scores, they were unearned and came after a series of BBs and  hit batters.

Thomas Peters singled in a run in that 3rd stanza, then Jesse Acosta had a big double, driving in 2 more runs.

Stephen Enright promptly drove Acosta home with the game's last base hit.

LITTLE FARMS 16 - LAKESHORE 12

The lead bounced back and forth all game. First the    Indians got 4 scores to open the game. The Pirates answered immediately with 5 runs of their own.

Lakeshore came back and got 2 more scores in the top of the 2nd to regain the lead 6-5.

However, the River Ridge crew exploded for 8 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, now leading 13-6.

The Indians had one base runner in their 3rd, but couldn't move him around.

LF tallied 2 more scores in the bottom of the 3rd, and extended their lead to 15-6.

But the Indians were not done just yet - they fought back and scored 6 more times to close things up to 15-12, hoping for another at bat and a chance at the win.

However, the Pirates were able to get 2 men on  after Chris Bologna led off with a single, and with 2 outs scored on a Harry  Phillipe base hit. The time it took for all that activity was enough to run out the game time limit and the ballgame.

Kevin Plunkett was 2 for 3 to lead the Indians at the plate. Andrew McGuire, Scott Lauland, David Discon, Josh Lacoste and Perry Giambrone each base hits for Lakeshore.

Little Farms amassed a total of 14 base hits in the contest. Five Pirates had two hits in the game. They were Harry Phillipe, Bryan Whittle, Colby Mitchell, Kerby Steiffel and Chris Bologna.

SUNDAY May 22nd

GIRARD 6 - LF 4

The Vikings are on a 3-game winning streak, besting the Pirates from River Ridge by a 2-run margin on Sunday. The Vikings combined good defense and steady pitching to hold the league-leading Pirates to 4 runs. Jack Heidingsfelder and Colby Brunet combined to scatter 6 LF hits , allow a reasonable 3 BBs to set the tone for the day.

The Girard defense made all but one of the plays they were handed, repeatedly getting the routine outs without mistakes.

The Viking offense only had 5 base hits, but the hits came at opportune times.

The game was close trough 2 innings as each team had one run and the game was tied until the 3rd. LF scored three time in the top of the 3rd, but Girard answered with 4 runs in the bottom half, to lead 5-4. The Vikes tacked on an insurance score in the bottom of the 4th while setting the Pirates down in their 4th and 5th without a score.

For LF, the big blast of the day was a booming triple by DP Collet in the 6th with 2 out. He was stranded there as the Pirates could not move him the last 80 feet to the plate.

Stephen Enright had a doble for Girard and Jack Heidingsfelder, Tristen Hose and Glen Gebo had singles in their 4th inning to produce their 4 scores in that at bat.

MILEY 5 - BRIGHT 1

The Falcons have been on a skid lately, having difficulty scoring runs and getting wins. They are playing hard but are coming up short.

Bright and Miley had 5 hits apiece; Bright committed 1 error and MIley had none. The Cardinals struck out 7 times and the Falcons had 6 Ks. The difference, however, was the BBs totals. Miley was the recipient of 8 base-on-balls and the Cardinal pitching only walked one Bright batter. Those 7 additional base-runners were the difference.

Kevin Bird was 2 for 2 to lead the Falcons.

Kyle Schneider, and Trent Tully had timely base hits in the all-important Miley 3rd inning.

TUESDAY, MAY 24th

BRIGHT 14 - LAKESHORE 3

Tuesday night we began our adjusted schedule to accommodate the school trips where league players would be unavailable.

Bright got back on the winning track taking a lopsided win from Lakeshore. The game only went 4 innings and Bright scored in all of those. Lakeshore got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd, with 3 tallies, but that's where it ended.

Trey Cassara and Chase Fourcade each tossed 2 innings for the Falcons with Trey giving up 4 hits. but no scores. Chase gave up 3 runs, but only 1 hit as his defense experienced 3 errors in the 3-run third.

Lakeshore pitching struggled all game and allowed 8 BBs to go with the defense's 3 miscues. All those those base-runners and the timely base hits proved way too much for the east-end Indians.

The big Falcon blast came from Jordan Spann who racked up the league's first home run - an inside the park variety in the top of the 3rd.

Dominic Lemeunier was 1 for 1, Josh Lacoste had a double and David Discon, Scott Lauland and Nickie Toups each had singles.

LAKESHORE 5 - GIRARD 4

The Indians had a double-header tonight and bounced back from the early game loss to play well and hold off a late Viking rally to garner a 5-4 win.

Kevin Plunkett pitched well until he tired in the 5th and eventually ran out his pitch limit and had to give way to Nickie Toups.

Nickie was shaky early on and hit the first batter he faced, then promptly walked the next one. The Vikings could smell the chance they were given, being down 5-2 in the bottom of the last. Just as things were looking black for Lakeshore, Toups got a pop-up and then a strike-out to record 2 of the three outs he needed to close the game down. However, Stephen Enright made it very interesting with a 2 RBI single.

Then Tristen Hose was hit by a pitch and he stole 2nd on the first pitch to get into scoring position for the tying run. Glen Gebo drove a good pitch into deep centerfield, but the catch was made and the Lakeshore win was preserved.

Enright was the offensive leader for the Vikes. He had a double and a single.

Scott Lauland went 2 for 2 for Lakeshore. Kirk Moyer, Josh Lacoste, David Discon, Andrew McGuire and Nickie Toups all had singles for the Indians.

League play continues on Thursday and Friday of this week. There are no games Memorial Day weekend and the schedule resumes Tuesday, May 31st after the brief break.

THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011

Girard 10 - miley 3

MIley started early with a single run in the bottom of the 1st, but things went the other way thereafter. Girard bounced back with 5 scores in the top of the 2nd , where nine Vikings came to the plate.

Stephen Enright led off with a single and Tristen Hose came up big with a triple to score Stephen. A SAC fly by Glenn Gebo brought  Ttisten in.

The Cardinals went up and down in order in the bottom half. Girard then proceeded top get 4 more runs in their 3rd. Jeff Acosta had a single, then Enright had his second single of the game. Then after Hose walked, Gebo delivered a base hit and drove in a couple of runs.

Miley came back with a single score in their 3rd and another in the 4th, but when it was all done , it was not enough.

Nemo Bradley led the Cardinals with a 2 for 2 night at the plate. Kyle Hugert, Kyle Schneider, Craig Hefler and Dominic Giovingo all had base hits. Giovingo had a double.

BRIGHT - MILEY

Game two of the night was plagued with lightning and was eventually called after 2 innings, so it will not be official.

Bright had a comfortable lead, pulling away to 11-1 when play was halted.  The decision was made to wait to see how the weather would cooperate, but things appeared to get better, then worse again, so the game was called.

In our league we do not have the ability to make up rain-outs, so we move to the next scheduled games. These will be Friday night when Bright takes on LF in the 6 pm game and Girard in the nightcap.

Then its the weekend off only with play to resume on Tuesday, May 31st.

FRIDAY MAY 27th

BRIGHT 9 - LF 5

Bright had 2 games to play this night and started out with a bang, scoring in the first 4 innings of the early game on Friday May 27th, slowing pulling away from the Pirates from River Ridge.

LF did score 5 runs of their own  in the bottom of the 1st to briefly get the lead at 5-1. However, the 3rd stanza saw the Falcons get 2 scores in the 2nd and 4 more runs in the 3rd to move back ahead. They got 2 more in the 4th to pad the lead and seal the "W".

Each team collected 6 base hits, but LF got 4 of their hits in the 1st when they picked up the 5 runs. Things got tougher after that as Bright pitching held the Pirates to 1 base it in the 3rd and another in the 5th.

The Bright defense was error prone in the LF 1st, making 4 errors, but they buckled down and went error-less the remainder of the way.

Kyle Burns was the offensive leader for LF as he had 2 hits for the evening.

Harry Phillipi, Colby Mitchell, DP Collet, and Jake Charpentier each had base hits against the Falcons.

Chase Fourcade, Kevin Bird, Jordan Spann, Zach Gorrondona, Taylor Hastings and Max Michaels were the Falcons with base hits vs. Little Farms.

GIRARD 5 - BRIGHT 3

Bright dropped the second game of their double-header Friday night to Girard in a game with a close score, but riddled with Falcon errors that all came early in the game. Just as Bright had done in the 6 pm game, they committed a number of fielding and throwing errors that put them down in the score almost immediately.

Kevin Bird came on to pitch in the 2nd inning with one out and pitched fairly well, shutting the Vikings out for the remainder of the contest.  The Bright defense also stiffened and supported him well, playing error-free baseball.

Glen Gebo went the distance for the Girard contingent, spreading 4 base hits around so as to keep the damage to a minimum.

Trey Cassara, Chase Fourcade, Kevin Bird and Jacob Horridge got the Falcon base hits.

Grant Planchett, Tyler Braud, Jesse Acosta, Stephen Enright and Cole Greishaber provided the offense for the Vikings.

TUESDAY, MAY 31st

LF 9 - MILEY 8

The schedule at Jefferson had one game only on this first day back after the Memorial Day weekend. The game was almost out of hand for the Cardinals, however, as the River Ridge crew umped out to a 9 -1 commanding lead and were apparently headed for a 10-run-rule win.

But, not so fast said the Cardinals, who kept battling and rand up,3 scores in the 3rd and a other 4 runs in the 4th, to go with the lone run they recorded in the bottom of the 1st inning.

Miley ended the game with the tying run on 2B and the winning run at first. But, a fly ball to right was caught and the Cardinal treat was done.

Each team went through a list of pitching changes as there were a total of 19 base hits between the teams - Miley had 8 and the Pirates banged out 11.

Four Pirates each had 2 hits for the contest. Harry Phillipe, Kyle Burns, Christian Smith, and Cory Ronan were the offensive leaders for LF.

Craig Schneider had 2 hits in his three trips to the plate to lead the Cadrinals. Six other Miley hitters had base hits to help their cause. They were: Tucker Boesch, Dominic Giovingo, Conner Cosse`, Nemo Bradley, Craig Hefler, and Brad Randazzo.

With the win LF grabbed hold of the league lead, if only by a few percentage points over Miley.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4TH

GIRARD 12 - LITTLE FARMS 1

Girard was in rare form on Saturday as they exploded for 10 hits and 12 runs, to run roughshod over the Pirates from River Ridge.

Viking pitchers Jack Heidingsfelder and Colby Brunet combined to limit the Pirates to just one base hit for the day. Colby allowed one walk i his one inning, and Jack gave up 2 BBs.  Heidingsfelder has 3 Ks in his 3 innings of work.

Harry Phillippe was the offensive leader for LF and the only Pirate with a base hit.

LF pitching allowed 10 base runners via hits, and gave up 6 free-=passes vis BBs. Then there were 2 LF errors as well. In all the Vikings had 18 base runners in the four inning ball game. All those men on base just put too much pressure on the Pirate defense and the result was Girard scores in bunches.

Stephen Enright had a 3 for 3 day with 2 singles and a double. Heidingsfelder went 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles.

MILEY 2 - LAKESHORE 0

We finally played a full, seven-inning ballgame in the second game on Saturday. It was the season's first.

The Indians were under-manned but played hard and  pushed the Cardinals the entire way. Lakeshore was in it right to the very end with a total of four batters on base in their last at bat, but they couldn't make it across the plate.

Miley pitchers, Conner Cosse' and Dominic Giovingo teamed up to limit the Indians to just 2 hits. In fact, Cosse' pitched no-hit baseball for his time on the mound - the first 5 innings of the contest. He walked 2 and struck out 5.

Kevin Plunkett and Josh Lacoste were the Indians who delivered base hits for their team.

Lakeshore pitching was very good also on Saturday as they held the Cardinals to just 4 base hits. Nickie Toups started and went 5 innings.. He was followed on the hill by Josh Lacoste.

Miley scored their first run  on a Giovingo single, followed by stolen base and a Cosse' double.

The second Cardinal score came with Brad Randazzo reaching safely on an infield error, and with 2 outs Alphonso Rojas singled him home.

Kyle Schneider also singled for Miley.

LAKESHORE 10 -BRIGHT 5

The Indians from the east jumped back into the win column with an impressive victory over Bright in Sunday's early game.

After falling behind 0-2, Lakeshore scored in every inning, with 5 scores in the 2nd, 4 more in the 3rd and an insurance run in the 4th. Meanwhile, the Indians put a lid on Falcon offensive production with a 1-2-3 shut-out in the Bright 2nd and a harmless single in the 3rd sandwiched between two ground-outs and a pop-up.

Bright did make a run in the 4th as starting pitched, Kevin Plunkett tired a bit. HIs defense allowed 3 errors and extended the inning, giving Bright additional chances.

The Falcons had only 3 base hits and these were provided by Peter Arbo, Kevin Bird and Jacob Horridge.

Lakeshore banged out 7 hits, with Scott Lauland collecting a single and a triple, to, lead the Indians.

MILEY 12 - GIRARD 6

The red and the blue mixed it up in Sunday's late game with the Cardinals prevailing 12 - 6. After a 3-3 first inning, Miley got 3 more in the top of the  2nd. Girard answered with 2 in the bottom of the following inning to keep it close at 6-5. The clincher was the Miley 5th when the red and white racked up 6 more runs, pulling away to a comfortable lead.

Girard got a lone run back in the bottom of the last, but it was too little and too late.

The offensive leaders for the Vikes were Stephen Enright, who had a triple and a single along with a deep SAC fly, and Glen Gebo, who had 2 singles for the blue and white. These two had half of the Girard base hits between them.

Seven Cardinals had hits on Sunday, with Dominic Giovingo and  Craig Hefler leading the way. Dominic and  Craig had 2 hits apiece, with a double for Giovingo and a triple for Hefler.

Alphonso Rojas had a big single driving in some key runs in the 5th, as did Kyle Hugurt whom did the same with a big double, also in the 5th.

MONDAY, June 6th

LF 6 - LAKESHORE 5

The Pirates started quickly and got 2 runs in the top of the 1st. The Indians came right back and scored  a single run on 3 base hits and a 2-out error. The 2nd was scoreless as LF had their chances, but left three runners stranded, just as Lakeshore had done in the bottom of the 1st.

Bryan Whittle led off the Pirate 3rd with a deep triple and was promptly scored on a Colby Mitchell single.

LF closed out their scoring by driving across 3 more runs in the 4th, giving them a seemingly comfortable 6-1-lead, with Lakeshore coming to bat.

Lakeshore fought back in the last of the 4th, getting 2 runs without a base hit, on a rash of Pirate errors.Dominic Leumeunier and Kirk Moyer scored  after getting on base safely as LF defensive plays went the wrong way.

Suddenly it was 6-4 with one inning left in the available time remaining. LF could do nothing in their 5th and the game hinged on Lakeshore's last at bat.

Two quick outs ensued and it appeared we were headed for another inning. However, base hits by Andrew McGuire, Glen Lorio, and Dominic Leumeunier, with a ground ball error mixed in, resulted in 2 more scores. With the tying run on third base, Kirk Moyer hit a rather deep ball to right, but it was well played and the threat was over.

The Indians out-hit the Pirates 8-5, but fell short on the scoreboard.

It was an evening of triples as LF served up three of this variety of extra-base hit, with Bright to connect on two more in the late contest. So, 5 triple on the night between the two games.

Harry Phillippe Bryan Whittle and DP Collet had the long extra-base hits for LF

BRIGHT 14 - MILEY 7

This was a four-inning ball game with 21 total runs scored. Each team had 4 at bats, with a total of 8 half-innings. Runs were scored in 7 of the 8 chances, with Bright getting runs in each of their 4 opportunities. Miley was successful in three of their four times on offense.

The big separator, however, was the Falcon 3rd inning where they tallied 6 runs to pull away from the Cardinals. Miley was able to get 2 runs in each of their first 3 innings, but could not keep pace with Bright.

Three Falcon hitters had 2 hits each in the game - Chase Fourcade was 2 for 4 with a double. Kevin Bird was 2 for 4 as well and he had a triple. Kyle Westholtz was 2 for 2.  Jordan Spann had a big triple in the 3rd to drive in 2 runs.

Miley was limited to 4 well spaced base hits. Kody McCarthy went 2 its in his 2 chances and Nemo Bradley had  a big double to drive in 2 runs as well.

TUESDAY, JUNE 7TH

As we near the playoffs the game intensity seems to be rising. The crowds have been good following the course of league play. Tuesday's games were very good, competitive baseball contests.

GIRARD 6 - LAKESHORE 5

Girard was limited to only 3 base hits, but managed to score 6 runs and take a 1 run victory from the Lakeshore green team.

Lakeshore bunted well and forced the Vikings to make plays on the move. The Indians used this under-used weapon well and got a nice squeeze bunt from Perry Giambrone to plate a run in the top of the 3rd. Dominic Lemeunier had  a bunt single in the 2nd.

Glen Lorio had 2 hits on the night with one also being a bunt single.

Girard  and Lakeshore each scored twice in the first and once in the second to take a 3-3 tie into the 3rd. The Indians pushed across 2 scores in their 3rd, while Girard came up empty.

The 4th for the Vikes was big as they managed to collect 3 more runs. The big blast was a triple for Thomas Peters.

Colby Brunet relieved Jack Heidingsfelder in the 4th and shut out the Lakeshore offense in the critical last 2 at bats for the Indians.

MILEY 11 - LF 5

The two red teams went at each other with a vengeance on Tuesday night and it was a battle for the first place position in the standings. These two teams have traded places at the top of the standings for quite a while now.

It was a spirited game with a good crowd in attendance.

The 1st went scoreless as the pitching was efficient and the pitchers threw 7 and 8 pitches respectively to sit their opponents down .

The Cardinals got on the board in the second, while the Pirates did not. After 2 innings, Miley led 1-0.

The third saw Miley put a 5 spot on the LF crew. In that inning the Cards got 4 of their game's 6 hits. It all started with Kyle Hugurt and was followed by Tucker Boesch, Dominic Giovingo and Craig Hefler. Nine Cardinals came to bat in their 3rd and Miley was ahead 6-0.

LF stormed right back with 4 scores with the huge triple by Bryan Whittle doing the most damage. He drove in three runs with his long ball. LF chopped the lead to 6-4.

Miley's lone run in the 4th stretched the Cardinals out to a 7-4 score, but the Pirates had plans to score again. LF did score once more in the 6th, but it was after  Miley had all but won the game in the top of that inning as they got an additional 4 runs to pull away.

Those added runs all came without a base hit as LF struggled to keep runners off the bases with 6 BBs and an error.

Tucker Boesch had a 2 hit night with Govingo, Hefler, Kody McCarthy and Hugurt all chipping in with base hits to spark the Cardinals attack.

LF went through the first 5 innings with only one base hit (Whittle's triple), but collected 2 more in the bottom of the 6th from Chris Bologna and Jake Charpentier.

Pirates sink the struggling Falcons

In the top of the 1st, Pirates’ hard-nosed lead-off hitter Harry Phillippi laced a double to the left side. This fueled a devastating 6 run inning marred by Johnny Bright walks and errors . The woes continued in the top of the second for the Falcons, allowing 4 runs from misplays and a solid double from short stop Colby Mitchell. Ten runs were all the Pirates would need against the slipping Falcons.

DP Collet hurled a solid three innings for the Pirates, allowing no walks, no runs, and one hit. Collet also picked up two hits at the plate. Mop-up duty was then handled by Bryan Whittle and Phillippe with the game far out of reach. Kyle Burns recorded two assists from behind the plate and also raked in two hits. With a solid line up from top to bottom, the Pirates grabbed the number two seed and will face Lakeshore in the first round.

The only “bright” spot for the Falcons came from an effortless triple roped by Jordan Spann down the right field line in the 4th.  After early success in league play, Johnny Bright has been inconsistent and has dropped three of their last 4. They have fallen to the 4 seed and will face the Girard Vikings in the first round of the playoffs. If they are lucky enough to escape Girard, they will likely face the  focused, talented, and spirited number one playoff seed, the Miley Cardinals.

Miley’s potent offense overpowers scrappy Lakeshore

The three through six hole powerhouse of Dominic Giovingo, Conner Cosse, Nemo Bradley, and Craig Hefler propelled the Cardinals past the Nickie Toups led Lakeshore Indians. With the game at 5-2 Lakeshore in the bottom of the third, Giovingo lined his best hit of the season, a ground rule double shot over the Indians’ Perry Giambrone.

After a base running blunder by Giovingo at second, Cosse walked and was driven in by a screaming double by Bradley. The Cardinals’ Bradley smashed three hits, including three RBI’s and a stolen base. To add insult to injury for the Indians, the sure- handed first baseman Craig Hefler collected two hits, including a triple. With Tucker Boesch and Trent Tulley jump starting the top of Mike Miley’s lineup, the Cardinals are not to be taken lightly. Mike Miley has developed a chemistry and a competitive fire from players, coaches, and parents, launching them into a first round bye.

Lakeshore’s Andrew McGuire fought valiantly on the hill for the complete game start. He contained Miley’s potent attack for the first two innings but ran out of gas in the middle of the third. Lakeshore battled and fought on the offensive back of Nickie Toups, who cranked two singles, stole a base, and scored two runs. Right fielder Kirk Moyer also provided a spark for the struggling Indians with a walk, single, and run scored.  Lakeshore’s pitching woes and defensive slips have landed them in the bottom 5 seed. But with Kevin Plunkett on the hill, Nickie Toups in the leadoff, Scott Lauland in the three hole, and an average of nine runs a game against their first round opponent Little Farms, nothing is out of reach.

Prominent Plunkett carries tribe past Little Farms

In the morning game of the first day of playoff action, Kevin Plunkett turned in a clutch performance, leading the bottom seed Lakeshore Indians to a second round matchup with the Miley Cardinals. He struck out 5 batters and allowed just 4 hits over 5 and 2/3 innings over a solid Little Farms club. After 2 and 1/2 quick innings, Lakeshore got started in the top of the 3rd with back to back walks by Dominic Lemeunier and Nickie Toups, followed by a two run single by Josh Lacoste.

In the top of the 6th, it appeared as if Lakeshore put the game out of reach with a three spot. However, in the bottom of the inning with the score 6-3 and 2 outs, the Plunkett was forced to retire due to reaching the maximum pitch count. Toups then took the helm and walked a batter, leading to a 1st and 2nd situation. This was followed by another Lakeshore blunder on defense, which has plagued them all season. After a gritty single by Charpentier of the Pirates, Toups’ tribe found themselves clinging to a one run lead at 6-5 and 2 outs. Luckily, the Indians escaped and retired Christian Smith to end the ballgame.  While the Indians survived on the back of arguably the league’s ace, Lakeshore’s inconsistency on defense must end; or it will lead them down the “Trail of Tears” tomorrow morning against the kids in red and white from West Metairie Avenue.

On a positive note for the Pirates, Little Farms’ Colby Mitchell threw well, allowing only 3 earned over a little over 4 innings of work. For Little Farms, the road in the losers’ bracket will be a long one, having to face the fiery Vikings of Girard to prolong their survival.

Bird overpowers Girard to clasp victory

In the afternoon game, the four and three seeds locked up in a barnburner loaded with intrigue, questionable calls, and excitement. In the top of the first, “Chris Sabo”-esque Trey Cassara started the surge for the Falcons ripping a single into the right-center field gap. Kevin Bird followed with a hard-hit double, scoring Cassara. In the bottom of the 3rd with runners on first and second and no outs, the Vikings down 2-0 opted not to bunt against Bright’s ace, Cassera.  This led to a costly strikeout. Fortunately for Girard, Cassera walked the next hitter and gave up a “Texas League” double to Stephen Enright clearing the bases, leaving the Norsemen with a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the 4th, Bright’s Max Michaels laid down a perfect SAC bunt leading to a 2nd and 3rd situation with 2 outs and Cassera at the plate. Cassera ripped one to the right side, only to be stymied by the cool and collected Stephen Enright.

In the top of the 5th with the score tied and time close to expiring, Bright made the gamble to steal Chase Fourcade with Jordan Spann at the plate. Jordan ripped one to the right side, but it was snagged by sure handed first baseman Tyler Braud, who then doubled up Fourcade.

In the bottom of the 5th, with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs, Girard again decided not to bunt, resulting in a strikeout. After a single loaded the bases, Bird retired the heart of Girard’s order to send the game into overtime with the score 3-3.

After an impressive 1,2,3 inning by reliever Jack Heidingsfelder in the top half of the sixth, Bird once again stepped up and struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the 7th, Bright reclaimed the lead when Cassera sent a missile into the right center gap. With the score 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Cassera made a throwing error, leading to a man on second with one out. Bird then hit a batter resulting in runners on 1st and 2nd.  After not bunting in critical situations earlier in the game, the Vikings decided to “test the waters” and bunt with 1 out and the tying run on 2nd base. Bird’s fast ball eluded the Viking’s bunt attempt, leading to a strikeout looking.

The runners stole 2nd and 3rd after the failed bunt attempts, then a pop-up to the right side ended the game with Bright victorious at a score of 4-3.

The Falcons have the luxury of resting while Miley must contend against a confident Lakeshore bunch. Girard must regroup, make better decisions, and lick their wounds if they are to have any chance against the well-coached Little Farms Pirates tomorrow afternoon.

Sidewinder Giovingo bewilders Lakeshore in a “heated” affair

After a deluge last night, the first game got pushed back to a two o’ clock start time. In the bottom of the first, Miley’s Trent Tully got the action started with a liner up the middle. A Lakeshore error and base on balls gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd, Lakeshore threatened, only to be denied by a rangy play by 2nd baseman Kevin Plunkett.

The 2-0 lead was all Giovingo would need. He appeared as if he had fluids constantly pumping through his veins, showing no fatigue from the summer heat. He worked a complete game 7 innings, tallied 6 K’s, and allowed one BB and two HBP. Kyle Hugurt and Kyle Schneider both contributed, tallying hard hits and RBI’s for the Miley cause.

The Indians hung around on a gutsy performance by Nickie Toups, who fell victim to the scorching weather and his defense’s 6 errors. David Discon roped a double, 2 RBI shot ,off of Giovingo in the bottom of the 7th, but the game was far out of reach.

A key moment occurred in the bottom of the 6th when “Bo Jackson”-like Nemo Bradley missed 3rd base. Instead of turning around to touch third, he risked it and took the run. Fortunately, Lakeshore failed to notice. Miley may not be so lucky next time in the driver’s seat game against Bright, led by their pitching depth and timely hitting.

Vikings oust Pirates from playoffs behind the stability of Enright and Braud

In a game loaded with base running errors by both ball clubs, Girard crawled back from a 3 run deficit to earn a matchup with Lakeshore Tuesday evening. In the top of the first, DP Collet made a beautiful catch in left field and preserved a goose egg inning; he also made a brilliant catch in right field later in the game. In the bottom of the first, speedy Cory Ronin drove in 2 runs to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Braud lined a single to cut the Vikings’ deficit to 3-1. Later in the game, Thomas Peters came up with Girard’s season clinging to life support, and delivered with a two RBI double. After a SAC fly by Jack Heidingsfelder, Enright launched a two-bagger into the right center gap, scoring a run and putting a nail in Little Farms’ coffin. Heidingsfelder hammered down the nail, closing the game for the gritty Vikings. Braud and Enright combined for a perfect on base percentage, recording two hits each. They will face Lakeshore in a predicted tight matchup Tuesday evening.

TUESDAY, JUNE 14th

Girard wins “Game of Poker” over Lakeshore

In an elimination game, action started in the bottom of the 2nd when Thomas Peters stroked an RBI double. A SAC fly later, Tyler Braud drove the ball the other way for a 3-0 Vikings lead. In the bottom of the third, Girard padded its lead when Glen Gebo ripped a triple, leading to another SAC fly.

In the top of the 4th with a 4-0 lead, Girard gambled by pulling Gebo on the confidence that their bullpen could finish the job. Since Girard upped the bet by pulling Gebo with less than 60 pitches, he is available for tomorrow’s evening contest with Bright. Gebo pitched 3 and 2/3 innings of strong work, allowing 3 hits (all singles), 1 BB, and 1 HBP.  All looked well for the Vikings when they padded their lead in the bottom of the 4th at 6-0.

However, that all changed in the top of the 5th, the last frame.

After back to back passes to Kirk Moyer and Dominic Lemeunier, Nickie Toups started the Indians offensive front with a two bagger in the right center gap scoring 2 runs. Base-on-balls to Scott Lauland and Josh Lacoste left the bases loaded with 1 out. Back to back singles by Kevin Plunkett and David Discon drove in three runs with the score 6-5, the bases loaded, and one out.

Lakeshore decided to “go all in” with a squeeze attempt.  A high pitch eluded the Indian’s bat, and the tag was applied to Kevin Plunkett. Now, with two outs, the game was brought to a thundering halt when David Discon got caught stealing 3rd by a nice block and throw by Thomas Peters.

Girard, who has all pitching available, must like their chances against a Bright team without their ace.  Making things worse, Kevin Bird threw 30 pitches tonight. Consequently, his fastball may lose some zip if used tomorrow.

Clicking on all cylinders, Miley’s engine drives the Cardinals to title game

In the driver’s seat game, the crowd was given an excellent show between Mike Miley and Johnny Bright.  In the top of the first, solid battery-mates Chase Fourcade and Kevin Bird ripped a pair of singles.  Jordan “Spawn” Spann then cracked an RBI single, scoring Fourcade. However, Bird blundered and was caught at 3rd, leaving the Falcons with the early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the 2nd, impressive starter Conner Cossee mowed Bright down with three swinging strikeouts.

In the bottom half of the 2nd, Miley’s Craig Hefler had a stolen base, which was followed by a Kyle Schneider RBI single leaving the score tied at 1-1.  In the top of the 3rd, Bright’s Spann sunk venom into the Cardinals by driving in Trey Cassara and Chase Fourcade with a power fade down the left field line.

With the score 3-2 in the bottom of the 3rd, Miley was unable to capitalize on a triple by Trent Tully when Cassera blew away the heart of Miley’s lineup.

In the bottom of the 4th, Alphonso Rojas recorded a hard hit RBI to get the game tied at 3-3. Next, Tully was intentionally walked. Bird then walked a batter in to leave the score at 4-3 , Miley. With two outs and the bases loaded, the “Voodoo Man” Dominic Giavingo launched a towering shot over the left fielder’s head clearing the bases with his team now ahead, 6-3.

In the top of the last inning with Miley up 6-3, Cassera started the comeback with a single into the left center gap. After a Miley error, the solid Conner Cossee fell victim to the pitch count and had to retire. Kevin Bird came up clutch with a single, driving in two runs, leaving the score at 6-5. With 2 outs and Bright on life support, Bird made a tremendously athletic play by reading a Nemo Bradley pitch in the dirt and strreaking home on the passed ball.

Tied 6-6 with 2 outs in the bottom of the last, Rojas walked and Josh Lopez singled. Tully then drove a hard grounder towards the second base side. “Mr. Rawlings” snuck through the second baseman, whose vision was shielded by the wily Lopez with Miley victorious at 7-6.

For Bright, they must come back hard tomorrow against a well-rested Girard pitching staff if they want another shot at the top seeded Cardinals. Bright’s Fourcade and Bird, “the battery mates,” will at one point flip flop tomorrow if they are to get past Gebo’s Girard club loaded with talent top to bottom.

For Miley, the driver’s seat is always a comfortable spot. A light workout tomorrow evening allows rest while Bright and Girard battle for survival.  The cohesion of the Miley unit from top to bottom puts them as the favorite to add a gold plaque to their already stock-piled trophy case off of Airline Highway. Lastly, things are looking up for Mike Miley with the voodoo man toeing the rubber on Championship Thursday.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25th

GIRARD 8 – BRIGHT 7

The specter of elimination from the playoff tournament was in the air and the fight was to get the right to play another day – for the league title versus Miley on Championship Night.

The Vikings sent Jack Heidingsfelder to the hill to handle the Falcon hitters, but things began to look bleak for him very early. After a Trey Cassara ground out, Chase Fourcade and Kevin Bird delivered hits to put two on with just one out.

Then up stepped Jordan Spann, who launched an 0-1 Heidingsfelder fast ball, moon-shot, over the right-centerfield fence.

Bright – 3-0  - in a blink

To Heidingsfelder’s credit, he retired the next two Falcons on ground ball put-outs without further damage.

As the teams switched positions and the Vikings picked up their bats, a Grant Planchette base-on-balls and a stolen base, led to a Heidingsfelder double and RBI, getting the Blue team a single score.

Thomas Peters and Stephen Enright followed with singles, but Chase Fourcade retired the next two Girard hitters and the sides switched again.

Bright 3 – Girard 1.

In the 2nd Bright scored again after Taylor Hastings ripped a 3-2 pitch into the gap for a double. Hastings was later able to score  on a mis-played ground-ball with two-out.

Girard  bounced right back, scoring 2 times, as Heidingsfelder singled Tyler Braud and Planchette home.

Bright 4 – Girard 3.

The 3rd inning saw the Falcons up the ante and get 2 more insurance runs, however, the question was, would the insurance cover for Bright.

Kevin Bird singled, Spann walked, Kyle Westholtz was hit by an 0-2 curve ball. This set up Jacob Horridge, who obliged and scored Bird and Westholtz, with a single to the right side. Then, Trevor Quatroy later followed and produced a sharp single, but Horridge was gunned down at the plate to end the threat.

The bottom of the 3rd was the key to playing again on Thursday versus Miley.

Bright ran into problems on the mound as Fourcade tired and was replaced by Bird. Bird later gave way to Hastings. But after the dust settled, 12 Vikings came to the plate, 5 hitters were walked, 1 got plunked, and five runs were scored  - on one base hit – a booming triple off the bat of Tyler Braud.

After the Flacons finally got back in the batter’s box, it was getting late and time was short. The Bright 4th brought 2 quick outs on pop-ups, but Cassara reached on an error, Fourcade delivered his 2nd hit of the evening. Bird, not to be outdone, had his 3rd hit in his 3 chances, driving in Quatroy, running for catcher Cassara.

With a base open Spann was intentionally passed to load the bases with 2 out. The third out and the end of the Falcon rally occurred on a base-running error where Spann got hung up and eventually tagged out before any more runs could cross the plate.

Now time was really short and the Falcons rushed out to continue play. Two quick outs were recorded, but the clock ran out on Bright.

Bright out-hit Girard 9-5, but the scoreboard saw the Falcons come up 1 run shy, with the giving the Vikings too many chances and running way to much time off the game clock and time-limit.

For Bright Kevin Bird led his team offensively with his 3 for 3 night. Fourcade had 2 hits. But the towering home run by Spann – the season’s only out-of-the-park shot , was the real jaw-dropper.

Jack Heidingsfelder came through on both ends for the Vikes. He overcame the 3 runs he allowed in the fist stanza and settled down sufficiently to get the win in  the long run. Then on the offensive side he collected  a double and a single, driving in runs with each hit.
